COLORS

Color Basics

Choosing the right paint colors should not be very difficult. In fact, the decision making process should be a lot more fun than confusing, you agree?

Monochromatic Color Scheme

You can use different tints and shades of one color hue. If you look at a graduated color strip, you will see five or six colors on the strip, each one a little bit deeper than the preceding color. The color strip itself is a monochromatic color scheme, consisting of various shades and tints of one color hue.

Analogous Color Scheme

Analogous colors are colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. Red is next to orange and purple. Green is next to yellow and blue.

Complimentary Color Scheme

Complementary colors are directly across from each other on the color wheel. A complementary color scheme could be blue with orange.

Color selection is determined by an existing color palette. If you are not starting with a blank slate, you will have to consider colors that already exist before looking at additional ones. For example, let’s say you decide to keep the carpet, drapery or the furniture in the room. You can use these items as your color selection starting point.

Carpets are usually monotone. Fabrics, on the other hand, might consist of a multitude of colors. Examine these items (furniture included) and try to “pull out” a color or colors you’d like to use as the basic theme for your project.

New Age Paint will never try to tell you what colors you should choose for your project or property. We will, however, stand by you every step of the way so that you can make the best, informed decision possible. Your satisfaction is that important to us!

Color Tips for Exterior Painting

  1. Color makes a first impression…an individual statement. It can enhance curb appeal and even increase the resale value of your home. A creative color scheme can also add enjoyment and value to your property.

  2. Look for interesting architectural details, or add your own, that can sparkle with a contrasting or accent color.

  3. Be observant — drive through various neighborhoods, established and new, to see color in action. Make note of appealing exterior paint color schemes and how it can adapt to your own home.

  4. Define the entry. Use color as a “Welcome” sign to your home.

  5. Windows are the eyes of a home — they can add or even define the character of a home. Decorating them lends crispness to the color scheme.

  6. Consider the exterior paint colors that cannot change like roofing shingles, brick, slate or stone. Be especially aware of highly visible steep roofs. A charcoal gray shingle may have flecks of gray-green or gray-blue that can be found on a paint color strip and incorporated into the color scheme.

  7. Balance is important between light and deep colors, as well as warm and cool colors; consider not just the paint color scheme, but all the elements that make up the surroundings.

  8. As you can see, choosing the right colors is not a simple process. There’s a lot more involved than a paint job, especially when you consider how permanent the colors  will be and appear to visitors, neighbors and people just passing by. It’s not easy but that doesn’t mean it can be fun too. New Age Paint is here to serve you and will make sure you enjoy every minute you spend painting the canvas of your new home or property.
